There is one day every year that people in retail countdown to like it is the Super Bowl. They plan and prepare like madmen and bring out all the stops to gain a leg up on the competition and this year is no different. Shops are opening Thanksgiving day and lines have formed more than 10 days in advance. Now it’s game time and retailers are ready to move from the red to the black. For those of us that consider shopping as our sport of choice Black Friday is our version of the biggest game of the year and we have been developing a strategy that will ensure that we get our wish lists filled at the lowest possible price. Along with mapping out the when and where to go on Friday another important factor to ensure success is to dress for success. Depending on where you are located your temperature will vary greatly from the beginning to the end of your mission. You may begin your day camping outside in the cold and end the day sweating it out in a store full of shoppers embarking on the same adventure you are and you need to be prepared for both situations. The outfit below is a great example of how to layer effectively for multiple temperatures.
I started the outfit with a brown turtleneck layered underneath an army green t-shirt. This option will serve me well as later in the night if necessary I can take the turtleneck off and have a short sleeve tee available. Even though the temperature outside where you are may have hit the freezing mark, not all stores will share that joy. As shoppers pour in from miles around, some retailers will find the temperature in their building will reach near summertime levels. That is where your trusty t-shirt will come in. Simply pull the turtleneck off and continue shopping. Over the shirt I placed a lightweight denim jacket that will serve to keep me warm if I need to campout. The final element to the outfit is a cross-body bag for handsfree shopping. Avoid the mistake of inadvertently setting your handbag down by going cross-body all the way.
My final piece of advice on Thanksgiving day is to remember the reason for the season as you shop. Retail associates are doing their best to help you find what you need and you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Be kind and patient with one another and enjoy the ride.
I have also joined with several great brands to bring you an opportunity to get your Black Friday Style On.
